I'm so glad I chose Slow Clay as the school to start my ceramics education! I did this beginners course with Louise for two terms and have now moved to the intermediate class with Jane. The teachers have been brilliant! Skilled in ceramics with a real passion for their subject, and with the ability to teach - they know how to break down and explain techniques clearly and I felt very supported as a beginner. I love the Slow Clay philosophy and use of Japanese throwing techniques as it's very ergonomic. You have awareness of breathing and posture... it's like yoga... you prevent injury by being aware of your whole body in a fairly physical activity. Highly recommend this course. You could do just one term, have some fun, and walk away with some beautiful bowls and teacups. Or if you want to continue learning, the beginners course sets you up with solid foundation skills for ongoing journeys in clay.
The class was a fantastic introduction to wheel throwing, including wedging and preparing the clay, setting up the wheel/clay, shaping, carving the base and glazing. Louise was a patient and knowledgeable teacher who had me excited to slow down each Thursday. Definitely an amazing intro to clay.
The energy, pace & ambience at Slow Clay is second to none! This was not my first term learning at Slow Clay - Like many (students), I have continued with my Slow Clay journey, as one term is simply not enough!! This term I continued Wheel classes with Louise - whose patience & pleasure with each student's progress creates a wonderfully encouraging atmosphere for all.
I also tried my hand(s) at Prue's Form & Surface class, which opened me up to a whole new world of clay(s)! Prue's vast knowledge & warm teaching style give each student plenty of space to explore their own ideas - all are valid, none are dismissed & it is this style which I have found to be consistent amongst the Slow Clay teachers which is the hook that has kept reeling me back to Slow Clay!! A wonderful way to get your hands dirty & your mind clean & clear! Thanks so much!
